PLASMA SHOCK PEENING (PSP)

Controlled Energy Shockwave Generator

Shock peening is an advanced method for enhancing the fatigue life and operational reliability of metal components. PSP utilize different physical principle for creating shockwave, compared to laser shock peening (LSP). We achieve the same values for the treated surface as with LSP.
We develop the shockwaves generator device. PSP utilizes a precisely controlled plasma burst to propel a impactor to high speeds (around 4 km/s). This high-velocity impact generates a targeted shockwave on the material surface. The shockwaves cause plastic deformations in metal material surface layer leading to impartment of beneficial compressive residual stresses.

Potential of PSP Technology

PSP excels where inducing compressive residual stresses strengthens the metal against surface-initiated failures, namely: material fatigue, crack expansion, corrosion-induced cracks, abrasion, cavitation.
PSP can be implemented in various manufacturing processes to increase production quality at relatively low additional cost.

The application device is positioned by an industrial robot above the workpiece and applies individual spots on the surface according to the CAM program.

Cold process advantage

PSP operates at a low temperature, minimizing the risk of thermal influence or material property changes in the treated area.

Energy Control

The maximum energy delivered per individual spot currently is approximately 10 J. This value is defined by CAM system (Computer Aided Manufacturing), enabling fine-tuning of the surface energy imparted by the shockwave.

Tailoring Treatment Depth

The depth of material affected by the process is directly influenced by two factors: the size of the spot and predefined spot energy. By controlling these parameters, you can achieve the desired level of surface strengthening.

The number of overlapping "layers" applied influences the depth of the affected material zone and the magnitude of the induced compressive stresses. This allows precise control over the strengthening effect.

The process is designed to leave the workpiece surface uncontaminated. This eliminates the need for post-treatment cleaning steps, streamlining the overall workflow.

Precise Spot Treatment

Each spot creates a defined impact area and measures 2.5 x 2.5 mm. A scheduled grid of these spots across the desired treatment area is applied, and the process achieves comprehensive surface coverage.

Compressive Stress Generation

The powerful shockwave effectively compacts the surface layer of the metal, typically reaching a depth of 1 mm or more. This compression induces plastic deformations within the material, creating beneficial compressive stresses that enhance performance.

Wide range of application

The PSP technology offers the advantage of not requiring direct optical access to the treated surface. It can be operated in a dry, real environment without any limitations.

This means that we can effectively harden internal parts of treated components, as well as corners of complex forms and other difficult-to-reach areas.
